Genesis 1-3; Romans 1

At the end of ch. 3, I noticed the loss of innocence at the fall. Man knowing good and evil, God doesn't want to allow him to live forever. That doesn't exactly fit with my understanding according to growing up in Sunday School. I think that I was usually taught that God didn't want man to continue in a sinful, fallen state forever. Obviously. But that's not what God says. In 3:22, He says, "The Man has become like one of us, capable of knowing everything, ranging from good to evil. What if he now should reach out and take fruit from the Tree-of-Life and eat, and live forever? Never—this cannot happen!" (The Message) How does this relate to our salvation? Does Scripture address this question anywhere else?
